Alexander R Schmidt, MD

Clinical Associate Professor
Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine

I graduated from Med-School at the Justus-Liebig University Giessen (Germany) in 2007. In 2014 I received my Anesthesia Board Certification in Switzerland and my training included a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology, in Adult Cardiac Anesthesiolgy & Intensive Care and in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care. After working 4 years as a Pediatric Anesthesiologist at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, I went to Stanford for an Advanced Clinical Experience in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology.
Since 2020, I am a faculty member of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Division at Stanford. My main research interests are preoperative fasting in children and anesthesia management for patients with congenital heart disease. As a clinical educator at an academic center, it is always a great pleasure and honor to work with residents and fellows, to teach, explain and discuss the relevant and complex physiology of pediatric cardiac patients and what needs to be considered for a safe anesthesia.
